Kaleb is now one week old, which is kind of a surreal moment for me. I still don't really feel like a mom, but I kind of feel like it's been such a natural transition- like I've always been a mom. I don't plan on posting updates on Kaleb every week. However, I would hate myself if I didn't put in frequent little updates. Of course, I would hate myself if I became one of those people that had a post for every little thing. Therefore, I am gonna try to limit my relatively normal little stuff to a general post every now and again. Anyway, here are some things that have happened with Kaleb this week:
**Extra Observation- Kaleb was born at the weight of 8 lbs, 3 oz. However, within 24 hours, he had already lost 14 oz, which is one oz. more than the hospital would allow for a regular discharge. (Of course, he also had 5 poopy diapers the first day too, so it didn't surprise us he lost a little weight.) We had to stay in the hospital an extra day to make sure it wasn't anything chronic. He gained 3 oz. of his weight back the 2nd day and was at 7 lbs, 15 oz yesterday at his first pediatric appointment, so we are pretty sure he is doing just fine.
**Extra Good Sleeper- This week, we have had our share of sleep deprivation. Um, duh! Thankfully, Kaleb has only had trouble sleeping for two of the seven nights this week: his first night was REALLY rough and our first night home. Both of which were a bit transitional, so we consider ourselves pretty lucky. Kaleb especially likes to sleep when people are around and there is a lot of noise going on (like he did before he was born), and I can only hope this continues as he gets older. Not that I want my child to become narcoleptic, but a "kid that can sleep anywhere" would be AWESOME!! The only reason this is a little frustrating is because he is REALLY hard to keep awake for feedings. We've been told to try to feed him every 2-3 hours, but when it takes an hour and a half to feed the poor guy cuz he keeps conking out... well, you get the picture! Speaking of pictures, this one of him sleeping is in our favorite blanket. It's an actual swaddler, with a pocket for the feet and velcro tabs and everything- SO PERFECT!! (Thanks for letting us use it, Jess.)
**Extra Large Hands- I finally got a good picture of Kaleb's hands. They were the first thing I noticed about this little guy the first time I saw him. The picture really doesn't do them justice, but I love that he's holding his daddy's finger!!
**Extra Bodily Fluids-Like all new parents, we have some fun little stories involving some of the wonderful excretions of our new bundle of joy. Firstly, it should be noted that Ammon changed every diaper while we were in the hospital without complaint. Unfortunately, he forgot that we had a boy his first few times and he got shot at, wetting all the blankets in the little bassinet. After we got home, Ammon was starting to get a complex because almost every time he would change a diaper, Kaleb would fire away... and I went totally unscathed... until yesterday. The first incident was a little after noon. It was time to feed Kaleb, so I decided to change his dirty diaper beforehand. Well, apparently Kaleb didnt think it was dirty enough, so right after I took the dirty diaper off and was placing the clean one under him, he proceeded to empty himself. There is a lot more power in those little bowels than they want you to think!!! Anyway, we had to give the kid a bath because it ended up all over his front and back and even in his hair (you could ask how, but it would be fruitless). We changed his outfit, his mittens and the changing table blanket.
**Extra Extra Bodily Fluids- Well, later that evening, I went in to change him again and he decided to let loose again, pee only this time. I had covered him with a wipee, but somehow he found a weakness in my fortification because, again, I had to change his outfit, mittens and changing table blanket. Of course, as I was walking out of the nursery he spat up on me, so I had to turn right around and wipe Kaleb and myself off. The outfit was still clean... enough. Then, like a change a matrix, as I was leaving the nursery the second time, he spat up AGAIN!! It makes so much more sense to me why pregnancy makes you have to pee four times before going anywhere: it gets you used to being late to everything, just like I see my not-so-distant future.

I don't necessarily think weekly updates are necessary, but milestones should be noted. Eric's sister does the 1-month, 3-month, 6-month stuff ... basically the dr appt schedule.
Ah yes, all the bodily fluids. Eric cured Mark of peeing on him during diaper changes by pointing his "wee" back up to his face. Cruel, but effective. :)
Oh memories. I don't remember having a lot of trouble with Christian but Ellie was like that. So I know what you mean. Thank goodness for so many outfits huh? LOL Love you all.
I really love that picture of him holding Ammon's finger! He really is a cute baby. You'll find it's tricky not to post every little thing because to you, everything is so darn cute...plus, post what you want..it's your blog!
He is so cute! I love hearing about your firsts, it is so exciting! I love the body fluids, but wait until you get pooped on, very exciting. Brooklyn had explosive poop and it almost landed in my mouth as I screamed and tried to duck out of the way. I love babies!!!
I think that you should post anything and everything that you want to share...or remember. I know I love to see and read everything!
So great how you can use words in a cute way...makes the stories come alive!
